I was late as usual for getting home, waiting for the last bus. Took a look at the time table, it was due in 15 minutes. Thought it would be easier to get home by bike. So I got one public bike, started riding home. It had just rained, and the weather was pleasantly chill. I usually take the way that goes through the trees, cuz there are sometimes cute foxes or deers wandering there. They're so adorable with their slim frame and fuy ears that even after a dull day at work, they bring up the mushy emotions in me. I was expecting such another such brief encounter that I suddenly noticed the snails. They are all over the gravel road. I saw one a meter away in front of me and was just in time to avoid crushing it. Being alarmed by that, I avoided several more on the way home. I felt so strange ... so ... sad, that I was so close to crushing a snail on my joyful ride home. Isn't that as cruel as life can get? That someone's mindless commute home can be another one's miserable end? Isn't that even crueler that I didn't even intend to harm them? I was at the verge of crying with the thought of them protecting themselves by their shell, which is of course so useless against bicycle's tires. And that wasn't, at all, me being super sensitive. It was just another reminder of the inherent cruelty of life. Whether you're a snail, or frog, or bird, or human, there's something out there that you can be crushed by. Maybe you're the lucky one who's seen a meter away. Or perhaps you're not. But you're not the one who makes the call. Your faith is in the hands of some mindless happy passerby who might accidentally notice you. The story of the crushed snails is the story of life in a nutshell.
